Olivia Yu is a London based fine artist, born and raised in Hong Kong. She graduated from BA Fine Art in Central Saint Martins, and also underwent education for Art Therapy in the British Association of Art Therapists in London. She works primarily in paintings, drawings and illustrations. Focusing on a wide range of the creative experiments and material explorations, Yu made a drastic shift from realistic painting into the style of abstract expressionism in her university years.
Her motive within her creations roots from the perspective and appreciation of primitive and abstract art within art therapy. She finds that the most direct way of self-realisation is to revisit our inner-self, using art as a tool to explore our sub-consciousness. Art, especially abstract painting has become a way she has chosen to respond to the world.
Yu values the process of creating as much as the outcome within her artistic practice; therefore she constantly challenges herself to be experimental and discovering different ways of using paint. She believes that portraying the most down to earth beauty in art is to free the natural behaviour of her painting materials while creating the most spontaneous yet lively fluid forms. Colours become sentimental and/or delicious, telling stories like a maze for the eyes to see through the dynamic abstracts created within her paintings.
